I have chosen to explain how human society has been impacted by technology by the creation and use of cell phones, while sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of them. I, as most all of us do, have a cell phone. After you read this you might reconsider owning a cell phone, how you use it, and what you do with the one you will be getting rid of. Before cell phones we talked on the phone or a land line. Before that there was sending letters. After reading how over the past 40 years with our conveniences in life, our cell phones, may be killing us ,you may want to get a pin and paper.
Some say cell phones are an inconvenience in our daily lives. I disagree. Cell phones have brought convenience to our lives from being able to have a list of phone numbers at our fingertips to watching television. We can call a friend or loved one without having to go home or have a quarter. You can take notes, send a message, or even send a text in a noisy room without having to get up and leave. Stop for a moment. Pull out your phone. Go ahead and pull it out! Hit your menu key. See the world’s technological conveniences of life at your fingertips just waiting for you to use them. And they look cool too. Hay, you got a message. You want to take it don’t you.
Not all the conveniences in life are good for you or the environment. Over one hundred million cell phones are replaced each year. According to a report I found written in June of 2008, we have about 36 million cell phones stashed in our drawers and 10 million cell phones dumped into our landfills. Batteries were originally composed of nickel and cadmium known as (Ni-Cd batteries). Cadmium is listed as a human carcinogen that causes lung and liver damage. Alternatives contain potentially explosive lithium or toxic lead. That means, according to this report, in 2008 alone about 6,200 pounds of lead dumped in landfills threw out America alone.
Now for the ugly truth about cell phones and the harm to us the user. Dr. Ronald Herberman, then director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, issued a warning to people listing steps to avoid harmful electromagnetic radiation from cell phones. Cell phones transmit their signal by (RF) radio frequency. This is a type of radiation. Another study shows by using cell phones for more than 10 years increases the risk for at least two different types of brain tumors. Click on the link to see the radiation frequencies of things in our everyday lives.
Make a choice. To have a small hand held conveniences in life that will help you threw out the day and that may save your life one day, or to risk slowly killing yourself with radiation frequencies . We have allowed our greed for convenience to impact our life. The responsibility is ours to preserve of future and that or our kids. How can we allow our kids to use cell phones for ten years and get brain tumors risking death before their ready for college? Don’t, teach them about the dangers and let them make up their minds when they are older.
